April is School Library Month, and according to the website for the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), the month-long celebration is meant—among other things—to raise awareness of the importance of libraries and librarians in the education of children. The AASL recruited former NBA star and author Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as this year’s celebrity spokesman. “America’s school libraries,” Abdul-Jabbar said, “are an inexhaustible fountain of knowledge. They provide today’s students with the skills they need to achieve great things in their lives.”
