Local residents of Chattanooga, Tennessee place American flags and other patriotic items at the makeshift memorial which sprang up near the Armed Forces Recruiting Center in Chattanooga, the site where four U.S. Marines and one U.S. Naval sailor died by gunfire on July 16. In this photo, Rachael Hendrickson and children kneel to examine the flags and other memorabilia.

A similar memorial sprang up in the grassy area in front of the Navy Operations Support Center and Marine Corps Reserve Office nearby. This Department of Defense photograph was taken by mass communications specialist 2nd class Justin Wolpert.
