Thursday Review Staff
Our blog, which can be found at Word Press (this can be found using the link titled “TR Blog” at the bottom of any Thursday Review page) is an open forum for discussion, debate and reader comment. But because of its tendency to attract spammers from all corners of the globe (we received over 350 incoming messages in August and early September alone), we decided to cull some of the best legitimate comments and drop them into this column for discussion. Here are a few of what our readers have told us regarding the following articles:
Pete Townshend/I Believe That Rock Can do Anything
Sol Leary: “Quite a wonderful post. Just became aware of your website through a friend who loves music as much as I do. Looks like I’ll be borrowing someone’s copy of Pete’s biography soon.”
Gartrell Cumpston: “Found this by accident searching for something on MSN. This is an extremely well-written article. Learned a lot I did not know about The Who. I’ll bookmark your site and come back to check on your music reviews again.”
Paris is Always a Good Idea/Book Reviews by Sarah Herrin
A reader at AOL: "Wonderful short book reviews. This makes me want to plan a trip to Paris. And I love that photo of the Eiffel Tower in the related article. Nicely designed website."
James Goodale/The War Between Secrecy and the Truth
A reader at Gmail: “I’m impressed with this book review, I must say. Rarely do I encounter a blog that educates and entertains. Your concept with this is outstanding, and there are not enough people speaking intelligently on this subject which affects both conservatives and progressives.”
A reader at Gmail: “A political aside doesn’t bother me; it’s the political ten pages that reassure us—the readers—that the writer is on the side of the angels because “he didn’t vote for Reagan and blah blah blah, Nixon the madman, Reagan the madman, blah blah blah…and if only we were reasonable and had negotiated.”
Dave Mazury: “Thanks for the excellent article. Never heard of this book nor of James Goodale before your review, and it is eerie how history repeats itself. The pendulum is in full swing.”
Brent Collins, UK: “In the U.S. you get easily caught in your trenches, Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals, and you sometimes miss the big picture: Barack Obama campaigned as a reformist, above the fray, above unilateralism. Now American liberals are blind to his actions and his new reality. How much difference has there been, really, between George W. Bush and Obama. When it comes to the press, how much truly separates Richard Nixon from Obama?”
A reader at AOL: “This is definitely an illuminating post. Someone online is taking the time and making the effort to write a decent, thorough article? And not something one-sided and one-dimensional? What’s up with that?”
Jeb Bush/Clint Bolick/Immigration & the Human Dimension
Brittany Farrow: “Not entirely sure why you titled this post “Immigration and the Human Dimension.” In any case I really enjoyed the article and appreciate the review.”
Antonia Foret: “You make this seem so easy with your presentation of the facts, but this subject is far too complex to be summed up in such a short book. Most readers would never understand the full impact of what immigration means. Though the subject matter is complex, I look forward to your next post on the topic.”
Jackie Hatley: “As a frequent blogger I am impressed with your website. I stumbled upon this book review while searching for items about Jeb Bush. Great content and well-written. I will book-mark your site and keep checking in.”
American Graffiti and the Great Boomer Experience
A reader at Gmail: “This is so cool! Nice to find a website with some original thoughts on this great movie. Constructive way to raise the quality of what we browse on the web each day.”
Lynyrd Skynyrd 40 Years After “Pronounced”
A reader at Yahoo: “Wonderful review of a great band. Very enlightening. I enjoy your retrospectives of great moments in rock and roll.”
